フランス革命後１０年間の分裂と緊張のなかで、１８００年以後のさまざまな思想はいかにして芽生えたのか。文学・哲学・歴史の領域をつらぬいて、１７９０年代におけるドイツの主要な政治思想家と政治運動を概観する。
分析の対象をフランス革命後の10年間に絞り、革命によってドイツの啓蒙主義者がそれ以前に共有していた思想的なコンセンサスを失い、いかに分裂と緊張の中に置かれることになったか、その分裂と緊張の中で、1800年以後のさまざまな思想がいかにして芽生えたのかを考察する。13人の思想家をとりあげ、その言説を分析しつつ、同時代の争点とその思想的文脈に内在する時代精神を描いた大著。

1949 年に生まれる．オックスフォード大学でチャールズ・テイラーの指導のもとに，ヘーゲル『精神現象学』の起源に関する博士論文『現象学の精神』（The
Spirit of the Phenomenology,
1981）により学位を得た．1991年からインディアナ大学哲学助教授，2001年からはシラキューズ大学で哲学教授を務める．本書のほか，『理性の運命』（The
Fate of Reason, 1987），『理性の主権』（The Sovereignty of Reason,
1996），『ドイツ観念論』（German Idealism, 2002, 2008），『ロマン的規範』（The Romantic
Imperative, 2003），『哲学者としてのシラー』（Schiller as Philosopher,
